My Deepest Thanks
...to everyone who entered my contest. I hope you can imagine how hard it was to pick 10 finalists!!! There were over 1000 works of art entered, and I sorted through the entries and started copying and pasting every one that I remembered as being cool to my "cut list" - which ballooned to over 100 entries before I went through and ruthlessly edited it down, pass after pass. Let me tell you truth: it hurts me that I simply can't afford to give everyone a big prize. When you're sorting through a pile of brilliantly creative work that obviously took a tremendous amount of people's time - it's hard to be ruthless. I'm serious; it's upsetting.

Now, it's my judges' problem to decide on the winners. Judges are:
Delores (artist)
Bill (computer security guru and researcher)
Ron (manager of IT security at a biotech company)
Rachel (university professor)
Dan (computer consultant and vocalist)
None of them are involved with DA and we can all trust them to be unbiased. I'm expecting the final results to be in by mid next week.

This contest wound up being much much bigger than I expected it to be, and your response was amazing. I'd hug you all, if I could,
thank you so very much,
mjr.

OK so I made the finals :D

However reading a lot of the comments I am slightly surprized at the attitude of some people. I enter art contests all the time. I win a lot. I've won $2000+ prizes. You people do realise it ALLWAYS comes down to the opinion of 1 person right? Art competions are 90% luck, how can you possibly predict the taste of 1 individual running to your own art work?
Also I would like to art, better technical, taking longer, and so on DOES NOT make a better work of art. (which is hard to accept from me, since I take forever and am very technical) Most of Van Gough's works were finished in 3-4 hours, and as far as classical painting technique goes they are rough as guts.
To cut a long story short, this art contest was run if anything more like the others out in the real world then I expected, we should all stfu and respect the huge amount of work put in by the judge.
P.S. it was said all along it would be judged purely on what he felt like at the time.....how can that possibly be disagreed with?
/end rant

Of course "it always comes down to the opinion of one person." And yes, a lot of people were disappointed, and expressed that. Who knows--perhaps you, too would have been frustrated/disappointed/dismayed if you hadn't made it into the top ten.

Just a thought... :)

Hmmmmmmmmm no. I have lost far more important comps to art work I hated many many times.

I'd have been fine with it, just as not getting in the top 3 really doesn't phase me. Much as an Ipod would have been cool, I sold the drawing for quite a bit more, so I can just go buy one if I like :P
I never make art for comps unless its something I would have done reguardless, therefore if I lose I've lost nothing, and winning is more to keep my gallery in things to write about me.

Yeah I'll have to agree with todie, not too impressed with the overall finalist pieces. It's disappointing not to see any paintings among them. There were several that were better than some of these pieces.

But just my opinion. Good Luck all

I like how you chose your judges, independent and unbiased. Kudos to you Sir. I think that's how
it should be.

To be able to make it to top ten is a win win already. Congratulations to the ten finalist.

I don't get why my image "godess warrior" or "the walking on dead souls" didn't get on the top 10. Could you explain why? I'm not being a bad loser or anything, its just that I'm an artist striving to be one of the best and here you choose some photomanipulation that took maybe some 50 minutes (for at least that's what it would take me to do some of the choosen here) over my paintings which consumed time and skill to do. I understand that you had to evaluate many images and it was tiring doing so, but I feel like I was riped off by trying to actually do some decent stuff for the contest as some other contestants did.

There is no question that your art is beautiful and that it takes a tremendous amount more work than some of the photomanipulations that are in the final 10. The problem that I was up against was that I'd announced that the contest was an open-ended "what pleases me" contest and that's what I decided to judge upon. As it was, there were at least 100 works (including your "walking on dead souls") that I would have happily put onto a finals list - but it's still going to boil down to a single winner.

You (and one other artist) raise a really interesting point about the amount of time that it takes to produce a work. It's both a tremendous consideration and not a consideration at all. I'm still mulling over that one and I hope/intend to write a journal entry on it in the next couple days.

Sorting through and deciding on a cut-list for this contest has been an emotionally draining and difficult experience. The joy of seeing all this wonderful art has been seriously alloyed by my awareness that no matter what I did, I was going to hurt someone's feelings or make them re-assess their art. As a consequence, I'm pretty sure that I won't be doing another contest.

I will be waiting for that journal entry then. I don't know if you read a discussion that I had with another DA member *Iriesurfinchick that's on this journal, but I would advise you to read it so that you will have a better ideia of what I thought on the matter.

I'm not at all surprised that this might be your last contest...in your shoes, I expect I'd feel the same.

I tempered my own very great disappointment in the choice of finalists and in not being including in the top ten, with the empathy I couldn't avoid feeling over the kind of difficult choices you had to make. Ultimately, a contest like this one comes down to the tastes and preferences of one single person, and those can't really be disputed.

I can understand why people are unhappy, but I'm getting a lot of PMs and emails and it's pissing me off. This is definitely my last contest.

I may be upset, but not at the fact that I'm not in the top 10. I just think people should have known more about how you were going to judge them. Obviously time and skill were not great factors. I think they should have been given the great amount of work that was passed over. I really am not trying to be rude, just honest. I was very impressed at many of the pieces. Their color, composition, subject matter and mood. They showed great time and skill. The problem is, I see none of them chosen. I just think those things should have been examined more thoroughly.

Or the Judging could have been reversed. Let the 7 or more judges, judge all the submitted pieces. That would have aloud each piece multiple critique, narrowing the field down the the best 10, then you could choose your fav. just a suggestion. And you CAN have other contests. Just limit the submissions. SAY......the first 400 or so

Don't feel like that, I think people are unhappy because we are accustomed to ather kind of contest.
I see the top again, and I think that you choose because of your likes and cause of the concept, but normaly, we see on the contests that people who win are those that are more perfect technicaly, or extremely beautiful images. So it's that because I think that people it's unhappy, because some of the images in the ten are average technicaly.

However, It is very courageous of your hand to be able to choose 10 images of 1000 only by your own. So congrats for that.
Hope that you reconsidely "This is definitely my last contest." because your stock it's more than beautiful and very useful.
:)

I'm not going to stop posting stock, but I am done with contests. I'm writing a journal entry that will explain my reasoning for it. It's not hard feelings.

And, yes, you're right - there are a lot of technically superior works that I didn't put in the finalist list. Some of them I just didn't like as much as these. I'm not going to talk about that yet until my judges are done with choosing the winners.
