The rope, knotted into a bow, with its long trailing ends, really makes this picture. Depending on how one reads the element, you can come away with two very different interpretations of this image.

On the one hand, the young woman is clearly a willing gift. With the ends of rope and the loops of the knot within such easy reach of her fingers, she could easily untie herself, and thus it is only with her cooperation and intentional submission that she is handed over.

On the other hand, perhaps all is not as it seems, and the knot IS impervious to all attempts to loose it, despite its appearance. Black against the young woman's pale skin and white shift, it now takes on a more sinister, taunting aspect, as a seemingly gentle but inescapable fetter that imposes itself upon a victim, even while it invites her to make futile attempts at escape. Her head, then, is bowed from carrying the weight and mass of the thick cable.
